My name is Harriet Houston and I am a NESA accredited teacher offering tutoring for primary through to university levels in Latin, French and English. I have worked as a full time teacher in private schools in NSW for 7 years and after moving to the country to live on my husband's property and with the birth of our first child I am now looking for my online teaching from home.

A few years ago, just as Covid was taking a hold of the world and moving education to an online landscape, I moved to the country to live on my husband's property in Inverell, NSW. This move, along with the uncertain circumstances of a global pandemic motivated me to set up my own online tutoring business to help as many students as I could to stay on track and to feel engaged and motivated in their studies. The shift in the landscape of education actually inspired me to transform the way I thought about my teaching practice and has resulted in what I believe to be a more flexible and adaptable approach which equips the students I teach with skills to not only learn and study online but to navigate online portals and platforms which are skills that are invaluable in today's world.

I have always loved languages. I started my journey learning languages from age 3 attending the French Australian pre-school in Canberra and then the Lycée Franco-Australien Telopea for primary school. I attended Frensham Boarding school in the Southern Highlands, continuing studies in French and beginning Latin studies. I completed my HSC for French and French Extension in Year 11 (receiving marks in band 6 and E4) and the next year upon completion of all subjects, including Latin continuers and Latin Extension, I was awarded the dux of the school and an ATAR of 99.3.

I began teaching in 2016. At this time I was in my final year of University, completing Honours in French, as part of a Bachelors of Arts Languages at the University of Sydney whilst attending St Andrews College. I had just returned from a year’s studying at the Université Sciences Po in Paris. Before that I undertook a Spanish exchange as part of my minor in Spanish studies, at the University de Monterrey in Mexico. I went on to complete, via online learning a Masters of Teaching Secondary at the University of New England whilst working full time as a Latin and French Teacher under conditional provision, at the Scots College in Sydney. I was also a stage 6 tutor and manager of year 8 Rugby Union from 2016-2018. I then moved home to the Southern Highlands and began to teach at Frensham, Mittagong NSW in a similar role and as Equestrian Coordinator.

Teaching Experience: Proficient Teacher Accreditation with NESA. Learnt French from the age of 3, attended a bilingual primary school, Latin from year 9 and Spanish at University. 4 years full time Languages (Latin and French) Teacher at a prestigious boys private school in Sydney. Full time teacher currently at a top girls school in NSW. Taught year 7- 12 (including extension subjects) French and Latin. Masters in Secondary Teaching qualified in Languages, including English and HSIE subjects. Member of the Classical Latin Teachers Association, HSC marker for Latin 2021 and 2022. In 2016, in my first year of teaching, I rewrote and created all resources for the Latin programme from years 7-12 Extension at Scots College. More recently, I have rewritten and created resources for a new Latin programme at Frensham in the junior years using newly created resources in a bid to adapt Latin to the modern age and 21st century student. I have also taught Latin online for the NSW School of Languages.

Every year of teaching, my year 12 students have received marks which has placed them in the top band for continueers or extension. Most recently some notable results include:

HSC 2016: 20% of students in Continuers and 50% of students in Extension received a top band result
2017-2019: I didn't teach Year 12
HSC 2020: 100% of students in Continuers received top band result and the highest result across all Frensham courses was for Latin extension
HSC 2021: 70% of students in Extension received a top band result
HSC 2022: 100% of students in Extension received a top band result

Approach to Tuition: Open and flexible to whatever method suits you and your child. The best tutoring is student directed so that the student's needs and goals are met and they feel that they are getting the most out of it! For tutoring sessions, I use Zoom/ Microsoft teams which is an easy application to download (like Skype but more features) as it enables features such as share screen, chat and annotations. I am familiar with most Latin courses used in schools (Oxford, Cambridge, Suburani, VSL) but also happy to supplement what is being covered at school with my preferred workbooks which are available to purchase from the author.

I am easy to talk to, happy for you to tell me what you want to learn alternatively I can direct the learning programme. I will help you to improve in whatever language you may choose. I have lots of teaching experience, teaching students from all different cultures, backgrounds and with special learning needs. I am available to tutor outside school hours and on weekends.
